Overview

Green Utopia is a collaborative animation project created together with students from FH Joanneum and a researcher from TU Graz.

Background

The goal was to bring a complex scientific concept to life visually: how Biochar, a carbon-rich material, could become a key resource in a regenerative circular economy by 2050. The animation translates research into something clear, engaging, and imaginable.

The project was part of the larger Green Utopia initiative by GreenTech Styria, which invites researchers and creatives to collaborate on visions of a sustainable future. Our team was paired with Dominik Steinberger-Maierhofer from TU Graz, whose research focuses on Biochar as a material for CO2 storage and circular production.

Result

The concept imagines a world where Biochar is no longer a byproduct but a central element of how we build, produce, and restore natural cycles. New technologies make the affordable storage of CO2 possible, embedded into everyday goods and materials. It's a future shaped by regeneration rather than extraction.

Our role was to take that vision and turn it into a short animation – finding a visual language that could make an abstract scientific idea feel tangible and hopeful, without oversimplifying it.
